REM
As a multi-layered montage of photos, videos and sounds, “REM” explores human sleep and makes the process of dreaming visible. The multimedia installation by no means attempts to illustrate a dream, interpret it or sketch a wishful image. Rather, Gudrun Barenbrock is concerned with grasping the world in all its intensity – including sleep, in which people process the information of the day in fragmented memories. The artist thus explores the fluid, uncertain boundaries between reality and dream, revealing the mechanisms of human consciousness. Like Barenbrock’s projection, the accompanying composition by Sebastian Gramss and Klaus Osterwald was originally developed for Graz. The music forms an independent level that corresponds with the visuals and at the same time contrasts them sharply. A text by Valerie Fritsch, read by Schauspielhaus ensemble members Otiti Engelhardt and Rudi Widerhofer, complements the work.
The composition by Klaus Osterwald is sponsored by the Cultural Office of the City of Cologne.

Biography:
Gudrun Barenbrock creates walk-in image spaces. For her installations, the Cologne-based media artist uses both filmic and photographic material, which she places precisely in selected spaces. Her subjective-minimalist works move between representationalism and abstraction, often in collaboration with sound artists and musicians. This results in dynamic visual landscapes that take full possession of the space and develop a strong sensual presence when experienced directly.
