Joseph Kosuth

NOT IN THE PRESENT CASE

Johannes Kepler, a historical great in mathematics and astronomy, was forced to leave Graz as a Protestant during the Counter-Reformation. 200 years later, a monument was erected to him in this place: The founding of the Joanneum was a political statement to make knowledge accessible to everyone – regardless of their convictions. With his project “Not in the present state of affairs”, artist Joseph Kosuth also refers to the scholar: the title is a reference to Kepler’s astronomical reflections on creation. For his work at Lesliehof, Kosuth also combines the medium of light with a Keplerian thesis that makes reference to the starry sky: The force that gives the aspects their meaning is inherent in all bodies and shows itself where a fact is visibly expressed.
