INCREDIBLE
Is it sleep or the dream of reason that gives birth to monsters? Inspired by a Spanish artwork with an ambiguous title, the artists Detlef Hartung and Georg Trenz pose the question of whether the presence or absence of our reason creates monsters, thereby focusing their project on the polarity of statements. The associative space of thought created by the artist duo is based on playing with contrasts: sleep and wakefulness, dream and reality, beauty and ugliness. Hartung & Trenz use the architectural conditions of the Joanneum quarter in Graz to open imaginary windows by means of light and typography, allowing insights into the underworld they have created. With the musical support of sound and media artist Seppo Gründler, the cone-like funnels in the floor are transformed into islands of sound that form a continuous, partly contrasting, partly adding sound space and are perceived differently depending on the visitor’s point of view.

Biography:
In over 20 years of collaboration, Detlef Hartung and Georg Trenz have developed their own form of artistic expression with which they transform texts into impressive images. Concrete language becomes pictorial signs in terms of both content and form. The resulting word images create large-scale image-text spaces that correspond with the real, three-dimensional spaces onto which they are projected.
